How Marble is Made: The Complete Geology of India's Favourite Bathroom Stone
Stage 1: The Reef (300-500 Million Years Ago)
Every marble begins as a limestone reef in a warm, shallow ocean. Shell-bearing marine organisms — corals, molluscs, crinoids — extract calcium carbonate from seawater to build their shells. When they die, their shells accumulate on the ocean floor and gradually compress under their own weight into limestone rock.
Stage 2: The Burial and Transformation
Tectonic forces push limestone deeper into the Earth, where extreme heat (300-700°C) and pressure (several thousand atmospheres) transform the mineral structure. The calcium carbonate recrystallises into calcite or dolomite crystals that interlock tightly. This metamorphic transformation is what gives marble its characteristic crystalline appearance and the sheen that limestone lacks.
Stage 3: Why Colours and Veins Form
Pure calcium carbonate is white. All colour in marble comes from mineral impurities that were present in the original limestone: iron oxides create reds, oranges and yellows; chlorite creates greens; graphite creates black and grey; manganese creates purple and lilac. Veins form where mineral-rich groundwater forces itself through fractures in the forming stone, depositing minerals in the crack lines.

The mineral content of the groundwater, the temperature and pressure of the metamorphic event, the specific location within the limestone formation — all vary across every metre of the quarry.
