Rainforest Marble: When an Ancient Indian Forest Became Your Bathroom Sink

Look at the surface of Rainforest Marble and you see a pattern that looks uncannily like an aerial view of a river system in a tropical forest — white channels branching across warm brown stone like rivers seen from above. This is not coincidence. Approximately 200 million years ago, the region now called Rajasthan was covered in a tropical forest floor, with organic carbon from roots, leaves and plant matter accumulating in the soil. When the marble formed under metamorphic conditions, this organic carbon was incorporated into the stone as brown iron-manganese pigments. The white channels are calcite veins — groundwater pathways through the stone. Together they create a record of ancient landscape, preserved in geology.
