Rosso Levanto: The Royal Italian Red That Graced the Vatican and the Hermitage
Rosso Levanto is not technically a marble — it is a serpentinite breccia, formed when the ancient ocean floor was thrust upward by continental collision and the resulting rock was fragmented, cemented and mineralised with iron-rich serpentine. The result is the most intense natural red available in any architectural stone: a deep arterial crimson with green, white and gold veining that captures the geology of ocean crust transformation. This stone has been used in the Vatican’s Papal Palace, the Doge’s Palace in Venice, and the Winter Palace (Hermitage) in St. Petersburg. It appears in some of the most important European interiors of the last 500 years.
